Katarina Witt started ice skating at the age of five. The talent she displayed soon became apparent, and she gained entry into a school specifically designed that caters to children who have a passion for sports in Karl-Marx-Stadt. Coach Jutta was also in attendance. Her breakthrough year was in 1982, when she placed 2nd at the World Championships in Copenhagen. Her graceful style and elegance of Witt drew the attention of everyone and she has been a dominant figure skater ever since. Olympic success Katarina Wit took home gold in the women's ice skaters at the Sarajevo Winter Games 1984 after a fiercely competitive competition. Witt won an even more close race the following year. Witt actually fell short of the free-skating competition, but earned the gold medal based upon her results in the mandatory figures as well as the short-form program. Witt is the first figure skater female who has won the same competition twice, since Sonja Heine. Hall of Fame Witt had a great deal of success in her acting career however, she returned to figure skating in order to compete during her participation in the Lillehammer Winter Games of 1994. Despite not winning an award for gold, the young skater won over the audience. Witt was named to the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame by the members of it in 1995.
